Operation cottage was based on two key assumptions.

The assault began in the predawn hours of august 15 with a heavy coastal barrage by an armada of nearly 100 allied war ships. The concept of operation cottage involved amphibious landings at two locations named the northern and the southern sector on the 22 mile long island. The japanese however had secretly abandoned the island two weeks prior and so the allied landings were unopposed.
That the allied staff might have had an unrealistic impression of japanese resilience and fortitude in august 1943 is understandable given the context of prior events in the pacific.
